The Galleria Park Hotel is very comfortable. It is owned by the Kimpton Group, which specializes in taking old hotels and renovating them to add modern amenities, and the Galleria Park shows how successful such efforts can be.

You enter through a lovely art nouveau lobby with a large etched glass skylight. Comfortable couches and a fireplace make the lobby lounge a pleasant place to enjoy your complimentary morning coffee or evening glass of wine.

The rooms are good sized and tastefully decorated, and there's excellent soundproofing to keep out city noise. The third floor roof garden, with potted shrubs and flowers and wooden benches, is a pleasant place to sit and read a book, and the jogging track around the outside lets you get some exercise without having to contend with city streets and sidewalks.

The staff is consistently friendly and efficient, and the location is very convenient. You're close to both Union Square and the Financial District and just a few blocks from Moscone Center and Yerba Buena Gardens. I was by myself when I stayed at the Galleria Park and found it a very comfortable hotel for an unaccompanied woman, in part because of the good location and in part because the hotel itself is small and the staff keeps a good eye on things.

A few minor quibbles: room service does not offer a hot breakfast, though the Brasserie Chambord does serve full breakfasts in the restaurant. If you have a laptop computer and want to dial out, you may end up with the phone cord (the phones have very long cords) strung across the room because the phone jack in the room is not convenient to the desk.

Even thought the standard room rates put the Galleria Park in the expensive category, they do offer corporate rates and weekend packages. You may also be able to book rooms at lower rates through one of the discount hotel reservations systems.
