Liberty Café and Bakery is a jewel of an eatery, with a small, understated street entrance and rustic white clothed tables. The crowd is dotted with mostly locals and this upscale eatery abounds with  comfort food in a rugged, elegant and wonderfully cozy atmosphere…the Bernal Heights favorite has been around for at least a decade and there are certain things no one else can replicate.

Everything is made right on site, and the bakery situated behind the restaurant provides luscious breads and deserts for the café. Try the bread basket back at mealtime, which includes a variety of whole wheat, orange bread, challah and others. Then, purchase a loaf on the way out to take home.

The  small,10-12 table enclave is perfect for a romantic weekend brunch or cozy dinner.  Highlights include the ubiquitous chicken pot pie, served in an elegant white bowl. It has just the right amount of crust with the soft, flaky bread hanging over on all sides and packed with tender white chunks of perfectly cooked white meat. California cuisine is highlighted in many of the standout starter dishes, such as the delectable Caesar salad and the tuna confit with currants and pine nuts. Besides the pot pie, the milk braised pork with broccoli rabe is worth trying. The pork was mouth watering tender and flavorful, and was perfectly complemented by the broccoli and a zesty plateful of linguine with ricotta.

Some standout deserts include the banana cream pie and an award winning orange blossom crème caramel.  The service is relaxed and professional and the chummy locals make you feel right at home in Bernal Heights.
