Located in Jackson Square, the classic supper club-restaurant fits perfectly into this historic alley. Arriving here, you feel like you've found a great speakeasy. The bar is a draw for the workers in the nearby advertising agencies who opt for the martinis, which are generous and frosty. Also take a look at all the novelty drinks that are shaken or stirred, like a rum mojito or a retro cosmopolitan. The dining area is split between a few downstairs tables and a small mezzanine overlooking the cocktail crowd. You'll like the rich dark wood, the mural and the stained glass ceiling. Classics like the French onion soup, potato pancakes with smoked salmon, crispy sweetbreads or the steak tartare are all good choices for starters. When it comes to main courses head for the dayboat scallops, the sage-perfumed chicken breast, or the hearty daube of beef short ribs presented with root vegetables. For dessert, bananas Foster is a worthy classic.
