Flo Braker
Flo (daveflo@aol.com), born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, attended the University of Michigan. Her culinary education includes the Ecole Le Notre in France and the Richemont Professional School in Switzerland. She specializes in American and European baking and pastrymaking as well as chocolate work, and her trademark is her extraordinary variety of sweet miniatures.
She is presently serving as a Trustee of the International Association of Culinary Professionals Foundation. She is a past president of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. She is the past president of the San Francisco Professional Food Society as well as a charter member of Bakers Dozen. She served five years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern California Chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food and is a member of Les Dames D'Escoffier, San Francisco Chapter.
Flo has been featured in such magazines as Bon Appetit, Chocolatier, Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens, Woman's Day, Pastry Art & Design, Ladies Home Journal and Cook's Illustrated. She has been teaching baking techniques and her sweet miniatures across the country for twenty years. She was baking consultant to MGM Studios for the Ted Danson movie, "Getting Even With Dad" (June, 1994). The Baker columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle since 1989, she lives in Palo Alto.
Flo broke new ground in the literature of dessert making with her The Simple Art of Perfect Baking (newly updated and revised, Chapters 1992) and the award-winning Sweet Miniatures: The Art of Making Bite-Size Desserts (William Morrow 1991). She also taped a segment with Julia Child for her popular "Baking at Julia's" series.
