top foodie family destinations around the world

Certain places in the world have food steeped in their DNA, and that's what makes them great destinations to visit, especially for foodies. So, if you are a family of diehard foodies, visiting these places to sample their famous dishes should be on your bucket list. Whether it is China's savoury dim sum, Italy’s delectable pizzas and pasta, the sumptuous curries of India, a comforting bowl of phð in Vietnam, and the mouth-watering pad thai of Thailand, a trip to any of these places will ensure that everyone in the family will be fully satiated.

1. China

China may be famous for its dim sum, but every region in this massive country has a unique delicacy that every foodie should enjoy. These foods are boasting with a variety of flavours, from mild, sweet, spicy, and tangy, catering to different palates.

Since China is massive, you must plan your family food travel well. Families with young kids would find big cities like Shanghai and Beijing more appropriate to visit. These cities have several family-friendly restaurants serving delectable dishes that will be easily loved by kids.

Families who want to be more adventurous in their choice of foods should sample Shanghai's stir-fried eel cooked with an addictive sauce made of sugar and soy sauce. Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan province, is best known for its tongue-numbing peppercorns and pungent chillies. Get a taste of its spicy pork noodles, hotpots, and tofu served in chilli sauce.

For families with picky eaters, it is best to stick with foods made of flour, such as the famous dim sums and dumplings. Noodles are also a safe choice, as well as steamed rice topped with chicken, beef, or pork.

2. Italy

Italy has long been known as a foodie paradise, so it comes as no surprise why it's a great destination for families who love food. Here, everyone can take part in a fun Italian cooking class, join a food tour led by a local, and eat at world-famous pizzerias and Michelin-starred restaurants. To save money on accommodation, rent a large Italy holiday rental that has a well-equipped kitchen where you can cook delicious meals during those lazy days when you don’t feel like eating out.

There are so many great places to visit in Italy if you're here for the food. But if you have a limited time, go to Bologna. While Bologna is famous for its spaghetti, there’s so much more to this city than that. This is where you will find the tastiest Italian finger foods, such as focaccia bread, antipasto skewers, olives, and salty Parmesan cheese.

Aside from Bologna, big cities like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan are also on Italy's food map. Given the country's booming wine industry, you will have no problem finding food tours that include a visit to the best wineries in the country.

3. India

India's food scene is as diverse as its religion and culture. Each region serves a unique delicacy to satisfy your taste buds. And while most people would think of curry when it comes to Indian cuisines, your food travel experience in India goes way beyond that. Every region within the country has its own dishes featuring different flavours and spices, many of which you cannot find in those Indian restaurants you have back home.

If you're taking the entire family for a fun food adventure in India, Mumbai is a great place to start. Order the thali, so you can sample a variety of Indian dishes served on a big round plate. If you're brave enough to explore the crowded lanes of Delhi, head to Chandni Chowk. Located right in the heart of India's capital city, this is a busy shopping area filled with markets selling a variety of things. This is also where you can sample the most authentic Indian street foods.

Before leaving for your trip, you might want to do a bit of research about the food travel experience in India to avoid any culture shock. According to Backpackerboy, India’s tipping culture is quite complicated for foreigners. But just like with most places around the world, tipping in India is all up to you. If you are not happy with the service, then don’t tip. But if you're grateful for your experience, feel free to give any amount as a kind gesture.

4. Vietnam

Vietnam is known for its delicious cuisines, so this country is definitely a great place to visit if you’re a family of foodies. Vietnamese cuisines are usually made from fresh veggies, along with some protein, such as beef, chicken, or pork. Flavoured with soy sauce, fish sauce, and a variety of herbs and spices, your food travel experience in Vietnam is something that you won’t find anywhere else!

Because of the French influence, a lot of the foods in Vietnam are familiar to the Western palate. Therefore, getting your kids to sample these foods should not be a challenge. There are many ways in which you can enjoy a fun food adventure in Vietnam. The best way to get started is to take a river tour of the Mekong River and there are plenty to choose from here. Choose the food-focused Mekong River cruise which includes a visit to floating markets where you can sample authentic Vietnamese street foods being sold on a boat.

5. Thailand

While most tourists would come to Thailand for the beautiful beaches and warm weather, this beautiful Asian country is also a haven for foodies. Food forms a central part of Thailand's culture. This is mainly due to the Thai's friendly and social nature. Here, a gathering of friends and family will often include a generous feast.

As a food lover's paradise, your family food travel in Thailand will surely be incredible. All over the country, it's easy to find restaurants serving delicious plates of Pad Thai noodles and delectable mango sticky rice. Although most foodies would head straight to Bangkok, some travellers would choose Phuket or Krabi. Phuket offers a wide range of food options, including international dishes. But if you want to experience more authentic Thai flavours, Krabi would be a better choice. Krabi is not as touristy as Phuket. It’s home to several home-grown restaurants serving traditional Thai cuisines made from the freshest local ingredients.
