Why European Wines are Still Leading the Way

If you ask a wine specialist where the best ones can be found, they will most probably tell you: Europe. It was the birthplace of most of the grapes used to make wine today, in any other country, and that is why it still sits at the top of the table, in terms of quality, in 2022. Here is more on the subject.

To Each European Country its Speciality

Anyone coming to visit Europe for the first time will be impressed by the variety of culture as well as of nature that he will find. In fact, each European country is unique in so many ways, and that includes the wine that it produces. You can order a few bottles from France, Switzerland, Italy or Spain at Cave SA, online, if you want to taste that difference. You can be sure that what you will discover in a great bottle of Bordeaux (France), will be quite different than in a spectacular Rioja (Spain). No matter where you go to eat fine gastronomy around the world, you will find these bottles on the wine list, simply because everyone knows how exquisite they are.

A Large Variety of Grapes

What can really be surprising is the number of different grapes that can be found in each of these countries. Just in Italy, there are over 377 grape varieties. Some of the most famous in the South can be found on the island of Sicily. If you want to taste a deep red, you will ask for a bottle of Nero d’Avola and for a sharp white wine, look for a Grillo. Those of the latter that benefit from growing at the base of Mount Etna are especially well-liked. If you move upward, passed Rome and the Lazio region, you will arrive to another one where they cultivate the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. We haven’t even mentioned some of the most famous ones yet, such as Valpolicella or Chianti. Yes, solely in Italy, you could drink wine from a different grape, every day, for more than a year. That in itself shows how strong the wine industry is in Europe.

Tradition versus New Approach to Wine Making

There are traditions in the European wine industry that will never be in danger. When you look at some regions of France, which has been bottling wine since back in the days when the Roman Empire was ruling over them, you understand that the quality of their product resides in the millennials that have gone by, since. Knowledge is safety for these wineries. But then, you will also find new makers of wine that reinvent how to make wine and bring it to market. That is true even in France, where you have new wine makers in the Languedoc region, who are taken over the industry, as well as in Sicily, Italy, where new wineries keep sprouting up, here and there, on the island. If you really want to try something different, choose one of the 40 wineries coming out of the Skåne region in southern Sweden. You will certainly be impressed.
