Bay Area Bookstores

by Cyndy Ainsworth

Some of the Bay Area's best bookstores are across the Bay in Berkeley. Two of the oldest and largest East Bay bookstores are Moe's (2476 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, 510-849-2087; e-mail: moe@moesbooks.com) and Cody's (2454 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, 510/845-7852), both on Telegraph Avenue right near the UC Berkeley Campus. Cody's stocks new books and magazines, while Moe's is known for its excellent selection of both new and used books. Also located in Berkeley is the Nolo Outlet Bookstore (950 Parker St., Berkeley, 510/704-2248), with consumer, legal and business books, audio, and software. It's owned by Nolo Press, the company that pioneered self-help books on legal issues, but it stocks books from other publishers as well. The original Builders Booksource store is on Fourth Street in Berkeley, and there are some excellent used bookstores scattered throughout the city.

Venturing over the other bridge, into Marin, you'll find Book Passage (E-mail: messages@bookpassage.com, 51 Tamal Vista Blvd. off Lucky Drive, Corte Madera, 415/927-0960), a general purpose bookstore noted for its travel and mystery selection and its writing seminars for budding authors. Book Depot (87 Throckmorton, 415/383-2665) in Mill Valley is also a good full service bookstore.

Heading south from San Francisco, mid-Peninsula booklovers tend to congregate at Kepler's (1010 El Camino at Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park, 650-324-4321) in Menlo Park and Printer's Inc. (310 California St., Palo Alto, 650/327-6500 and 301 Castro St., Mountain View, 650/961-8500). You'll also find maps and travel books at Phileas Fogg at the Stanford Shopping Center. Heintzelman's Book Store (205 State St., Los Altos, 650-941-1842) in downtown Los Altos is a general bookstore with a comfortable feel; just down the block from Heintzelman's is Linden Tree Children's Records & Books (170 State St., Los Altos, 415/949-3390). Even further south in the heart of Silicon Valley you'll find the world's largest selection of computer, electronic, and high tech business books at Computer Literacy Bookshops. There's a large store in San Jose, another store on the Apple Computer campus in Cupertino (yes, it's open to the public), and a smaller store in Sunnyvale. E-mail: info@clbooks.com
