Bay Area Outlet Shopping: Highlights From The Malls

by Beverly Dubrin

American Tin Cannery Factory Outlets
Take a break from sightseeing on the Monterey Peninsula to shop at the indoor American Tin Cannery Factory Outlets. The building dates back to the time when the main industry of this area was sardine fishing. Sardine were produced here. Today, the American Tin Cannery has two floors of shops that include Alexander Julian, John Henry & Friends for Men, Anne Klein, and Royal Doulton.

Factory Stores Of America At Nut Tree
Whenever I travel from San Francisco to Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, or Reno, I always stop to stretch my legs at the Factory Stores Of America At Nut Tree. I particularly like this mall for its housewares outlets which include Black & Decker, Le Creuset, Pfaltzgraff and Oneida. Among the clothing outlets are Motherhood Maternity, Petite Sophisticate, Van Heusen, Chico's and Jockey. A free shoppers' shuttle circles the center every 15 or 20 minutes.

Marina Square Mall
Marina Square Mall has the distinction of being close to downtown San Francisco and Oakland. With less than 20 stores, Marina Square is worthy of a special trip for its Nordstrom Rack (a clearance center of the Nordstrom department stores), Eddie Bauer Outlet, Ann Taylor Loft and Biobottoms Children's Outlet.

Napa Factory Stores
St. Helena Factory Stores

The Napa Factory Outlets, on the south end of this popular Napa Valley wine region, features such upscale designer outlets as Max Studio, Liz Claiborne, Nautica, Carole Little, and J. Crew.

Further north is the St. Helena Factory Stores, a cozy shopping center where Brooks Brothers, London Fog, Coach and Joan & David are among the tenants.

Outlets At Gilroy
Gilroy is known as America's "Garlic Capitol," but, for me, it is the close to 150 discount outlets that I think of when I think of Gilroy. The Outlets At Gilroy are just off Highway 101 north of the Monterey Peninsula. Esprit, Guess?, Big Dog, London Fog Kids, Capezio, Spa Gear, Jordache, Nike and Kenneth Cole are just a few of my favorites at this mostly-clothing mall. A free trolley circles the mall throughout the day.

Petaluma Village Premium Outlets
This small outlet mall in southern Sonoma County is anchored by Oshkosh B'Gosh, and Ann Taylor. There are also outlets for Maternity Works, Brooks Brothers and Villeroy & Boch.

Tracy Outlet Center
One of the Bay Area's newer outlet centers, the Tracy Outlet Center is close to Stockton and a good place to stop on the way from or to Yosemite. Among its 42 outlet stores are Fila, Sony, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Liz Claiborne, Genuine Kids, Anne Klein and Casual Corner.
