The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas

by Sally Bernstein

If you are planning a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, but prefer to be far away from the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas Strip, I have a solution for you.  Plan to stay in Henderson and be pampered at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Las Vegas.  Framed by mountains, Lake Las Vegas is a 320-acre man made lagoon, surrounded by a 2,600-acre Mediterranean-style golf and residential village. You will receive all the luxury for which Ritz Carlton is so well known but you will be in a Tuscan-inspired setting. Here the desert gives way to a sparkling lake and gleaming white beach just 17 miles from the Strip.

With 349 guest rooms including 35 suites, this AAA Four Diamond luxury resort offers the ideal Southwestern vacation. Amenities include: year-round golf; a Mobil Four-Star rated luxury spa; water sports and outdoor recreation; shopping, dining, special events and entertainment and easy access to McCarran International Airport and the Las Vegas Strip.  In fact, there is a shuttle that will take you to and from the strip several times a day.

The guest rooms are decorated with warm, soft colors and imported furnishings and feature oversized marble bathrooms, upscale bath amenities and luxurious bed linens. Each room has WiFi capabilities and high-speed internet access and, if you really have to work, there is also a 24-hour business center with computers and web access in the lobby.

Dining options include the Firenze Lobby Lounge, the Medici Café and Terrace and the Poolside Café & Grill.  And, if you really want to relax, the Ritz offers 24 hour room service.

My most special meal was the Veuve Clicquot Sunday Brunch.  I’m not sure if my favorite part was the unlimited pours of Veuve Clicquot champagne, the top notch and extensive cuisine or saxophonist George Butts, who provides live entertainment with his smooth vocals and soulful saxophone.  A holder of warm beignets arrived shortly after we were seated.  This was a wonderful prelude to the six culinary stations with specialties from around the world.  There was cooked-to-order large scallops with thyme and butter; egg Benedict with crab cakes; lobster ravioli; seared salmon with Japanese eggplant; buffalo meat; monkfish; sushi and sashimi; and an array of fruits, salads and breads, just to name a few.  And don’t forget dessert.  Choose from frozen yogurt with all the mix-ins or miniature French pastries and handmade truffles.  All in all, a fun experience.  Reservations suggested.

There is still more to do at the Ritz including: stargazing (which needs to be arranged in advance);  paddleboats; kayaking; canoeing; catch and release fly fishing; yacht tours; gondola rides and hiking and biking.

Be sure and save time for the spa. Tranquil is the best word to describe the feel when you walk in the door.  There are 24 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, a complete fitness center, exercise and movement classes, wellness counseling and men’s and women’s locker rooms. Desert and Tuscan-inspired treatments address the effects of the high desert sun, while the day spa's refreshing Healing Waters, including whirlpools, cool plunge pools, saunas and steam rooms, pamper and rejuvenate. So whether you are interested in a massage, pilates, exfoliant, couple’s treatments or maternity spa treatments, this spa has it all!

And did we mention Ritz Kids?  This counselor-supervised program is designed for guests age five through 12 and provides many activities from nature hikes to arts and crafts to cooking classes to summer swim lessons. Offered all year long, every day of the year.

Do you realize that this is an article about Las Vegas and we haven’t even mentioned gambling, or “gaming,” as the locals call it?  There is a casino adjacent to the hotel, just in case you are interested in that sort of thing. But with all the Ritz Carlton activities, gaming just might be an afterthought here.
