The Lodge at Pebble Beach

by Sally Bernstein

One of the most wonderful places in the world to vacation is Pebble Beach, California and the surrounding area. Home to the fabled 17-Mile Drive that meanders among the ancient pine groves of the Del Monte Forest, Pebble Beach offers the crashing surf of the Monterey coastline, a choice of three resorts, world famous golf, a myriad of restaurants, shopping, a spa, jogging, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center with 34 miles of bridle trails. Or better yet, engage in none of the above and come purely for a rest. A more serene place is not to be found.

Choose to stay at either The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay or Casa Palmero. The Lodge has been welcoming guests since 1919 with a bow toward tradition, elegance and gracious hospitality. There are 161 comfortable guest rooms and suites, meeting spaces, 4 restaurants and lounges, a promenade of shops and boutiques, a post office and a bank. But the main appeal of this resort for many is the preferred access to four championship golf courses. Choose from the Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and the Old Del Monte Golf Course. The Beach and Tennis Club offers 12 tennis courts, a heated swimming pool set on an ocean-view sundeck overlooking the breathtaking sheltered Stillwater Cove.

The restaurant choices at The Lodge are numerous. Stillwater Bar and Grill serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. This lively, casual, seafood restaurant offers sweeping views of scenic Carmel Bay.

Award-winning Club XIX, overseen by Chef de Cuisine Ressul Rassallat, is an elegant restaurant serving Continental cuisine with an emphasis on fresh foods that are in season.

The Gallery is a popular golfers' rotisserie and sandwich shop. The Tap Room is a congenial bar and restaurant and the lively Terrace Lounge offers unparalleled sea-vistas, including overlooking the famous 18th fairway of Pebble Beach.

The award-winning Inn at Spanish Bay, has 253 guest rooms and 17 suites. Encircling The Inn is America's foremost Scottish-style 18 hole linksland course with a par of 72. The Inn has 8 plexi-paved championship tennis courts, 5 restaurants and lounges and shops and boutiques. A health and fitness center with a swimming pool, weight and circuit rooms, saunas, steam and message rooms, an aerobic studio and a pro shop are available for your use.

Fine dining is a paramount feature at The Inn. Choices include Roy's at Pebble Beach serving Asian-Pacific cuisine for which Roy Yamaguchi is famous. Peppoli at Pebble Beach serves Tuscan-style seafood, pastas and country-style grilled meats and vegetables at dinnertime in a romantic setting, Sticks, a popular spot for golfers for breakfast, lunch and dinner; Traps, a relaxing fireplace lounge offering appetizers and hors d'oeuvres with first fairway and ocean views...and the fireside Lobby Lounge where you can see other guests come and go while enjoying a cocktail.

No matter what you do during the day, be sure to return to The Inn before dark to enjoy one of their favorite traditions: a lone kilted Scot walks the links, saluting the setting sun with his bagpipes. The fading echoes of his bagpipe song signal the end of another day at Spanish Bay.

The Pebble Beach Company acquired Casa Palmero, a magical 75 year old Mediterrean estate, in 1994 and opened it in 1999, after extensive renovation. The 24 exquisitely appointed rooms, adjacent to the 1st fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, include fireplaces and individual outdoor patios with hot tubs.

The Spa at Pebble Beach has 22,000 square feet of space for pampering and rejuvenation.

And remember if all this isn't enough, you can always venture forth to partake of the areas other attractions. Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, Cannery Row, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, the Carmel Mission and whale watching are but a few of your choices.

The Pebble Beach Resorts are located 130 miles (208 km) south of San Francisco and 330 miles (530 km) north of Los Angeles.
