legoland® hotel near san diego, california

by Sally Bernstein

LEGOLAND® California theme park has always been a major tourist attraction for San Diego.  The theme park, located in Carlsbad, about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego, rates right up there with the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego and San Diego Zoo Safari Park.  In fact, I’ve spoken to many parents whose children say LEGOLAND California is their favorite.

LEGOLAND California has been a daytime destination since 1999 but now that a new three story, 250-room hotel has been built adjacent to the theme park, you can spend more time at LEGOLAND.  This is the first U.S LEGOLAND Hotel.

This stacked adventure has three themed floors -- Pirate, Adventure & Kingdom – some backed with prime Pacific Ocean views.  Decked out with 3,500 LEGO® models created from three million colorful bricks, the new hotel comes complete with animated smoke-breathing dragons, a pool, restaurants, a lounge and the new Castle Play area targeted to younger kids.

Rooms include two separate sleeping areas, with a queen-size bed for grown-ups, and a separate area for up to three little ones, complete with a bunk bed, pullout trundle bed and their very own TV! As a special privilege, LEGOLAND Hotel guests will get entry to select LEGOLAND rides and attractions before the Park officially opens.

After a recent stay at the new hotel I can point out several things that will make your stay special.  If you arrive early in the day and plan to go to the theme park first, the hotel will store your luggage and call you on your cell phone when your room is ready.   All buffet areas have a separate and low serving area for children, so they can actually reach their food (great concept).  The lobby has thousands of LEGO’S that are accessible to children.  They can actually get into the playing area and build away.  There is a daily LEGO building contest; you are to use the LEGO bricks around the hotel to build a model, no taller than 10 inches, turn it in by 6 p.m. and see if you are the winner. Ever been in a disco elevator? As guests enter the elevator, lights pulsate in the ceiling to music, guests stand on “lava” tiles, a mirror ball rotates and a different sound effect announces arrivals on each floor. Two in room treats for little guys and gals are a wooden step stool, to reach the sink in the bathroom, and a built-in potty seat for the toilet. And each room has at least eight LEGO models that are delightful. Think monkeys, spiders, hats, and butterflies.

LEGOLAND California is a 128-acre family theme park and is the first United States theme park created by Danish toy maker, the LEGO Company.  With more than 60 rides, shows and attractions, it's an interactive, hands-on experience for families with children 2-12. The resort is also home to the world's first LEGOLAND® Water Park with slides and a lazy river where you can build your own LEGO themed raft. Next-door is SEA LIFE™ Aquarium with undersea creatures, and interactive discovery zones.

Don’t rush through Legoland.  Plan to spend plenty of time so you can enjoy it all.
