Happy Valentine's Day

lake_champlain_hearts Today Valentine's Day is celebrated by gifting flowers (flowerpetal.com), boxes of candy, wine and greeting cards. These cards, which used to be handwritten, are named Valentines, after Saint Valentine, who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were not to marry. This was in the days of the Roman Empire.

Gifting your sweetie is only one way to remember him or her.  Cooking for them is another. The following recipes will make February 14th special for you and yours:
Some recent new wine releases that will go with these Valentine recipes or will make appreciated gifts include: Banrock Pink Moscato; Geyser Peak 2012 Pinot Noir; Pas de Deux Moscato Sparkling Wine and Blanc de Blancs Methode Champenoise--Brut (both from The Biltmore Estate); and MUMM NAPA Brut Rose.

All the best in food, wine, and travel.

Happy February,

Sally's Recommendations

These handmade cookies are made in North Carolina and come in various shapes.  The heart shaped cookies are perfect for Valentine's Day. These cookies are made from an old family recipe that has been handed down for generations. A friend told me about them and I'm so glad she did. Each cookie is rolled and cut by hand, the same way it was made a century ago. They make six delicious flavors: Ginger, Sugar, Lemon, Chocolate, Butterscotch, and Black Walnut. After the cookies are hand-made, every tin is hand -packed and every shipment is hand-boxed.  For more information, click here

Texas Tamale Company

The Texas Tamale Company in Houston, Texas, ships a myriad of Mexican food products. I've tasted several of the lard-free, authentic Mexican tamales, which come in pork, beef, chicken, black bean and spinach.  But don't forget about their queso, which is a dip made with cheese, diced tomatoes and spices.  There are pepper sauces, BBQ sauces, beef chili, sausages and to round out your meal, yummy pralines. All these items are great for parties. For information, click here.

Dave's Gourmet Organic Red Heirloom Pasta Sauce

Try it tossed with your favorite pasta, dusted with Parmigiana Reggiano and a glass of your favorite Sangiovese.  For more information on this pasta sauce, click here .
