Packaging is used in vast scale around the world and continues to advance year on year. This is very much evident in the food and drink industry, and it is estimated that 10% of the overall cost of all retail products is through packaging. You can find many of these here, which are regularly used. Major companies around the world are spending millions on packaging, which is also now a great form of marketing and brand awareness, in order to attract customers to the product.

So what are the most common packaging materials used around the world?

  • Paper/Fiberboard/Paperboard

These products are all used regularly as both primary and secondary packaging for people and companies throughout the world. Paper, for example, is used for a number of thinner packaging products such as Kraft paper, paper bags, butcher paper and even labels. Paperboard is a thicker and more durable material, so it is often a popular choice. This is used for everyday items such as cereal boxes and juice and milk cartons. These provide greater protection than paper packaging. Fiberboard is usually used as corrugated boxes. These are very durable products as they have a lot of strength and are high crush resistance.

  • Flexible Packaging

The fastest growing trend in the industry has to be flexible packaging. It is now a very popular choice for many around the world. It is derived from polyethylene, high density polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate, which is a harder plastic than any other. This offers excellent moisture resistance and is a protective structure. These are regularly used for the likes of bottles and jugs.

Another form of flexible packaging is low density polyethylene and linear low density polyethylene. These offer excellent resistance to puncture. The latter mentioned is used for the likes of films and bags. This includes products that regularly package food items like dog treats. Auto parts are also something usually packages in this product.

  • Aluminium Packaging

This is a very popular product that is used for several different items around the world. Common ones include packaging of aluminium cans and containers. This also draws onto foil packaging. This is used every day for products such as food, beverage, medical and cosmetic.  This is great for protecting the product from external element damage.

  • Glass and Jars

The final product that is used around the world on a mass scale is glass and jar packaging. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are including in this, and make up the large proportion of the market. Other products include the likes of cosmetics, as well as décor and candles. A major positive for the use of glass, which is why it is a preferred option, is due to the fact that it is 100% recyclable.
