Bits and Bytes: A Pioneer Matures With Grace

A good Web site for food, www.sallybernstein.com, keeps getting better.
In the last two years it has added well-known guest writers, restaurant surveys of 15 cities and a tie-in with sites specializing in women's issues.

Sally's Place, the Internet home of Sally Bernstein, a San Francisco area food writer, is known for substantial articles on food and travel, along with restaurant reviews for 65 cities all over the world.

Ms. Bernstein began the site almost five years ago, an eon in Internet time. Two years ago, Sally's Place had a folksy look, with a drawing of a town square for a home page. Today, the home page gets right down to business, with clear links to departments and feature articles. But there at the top is a picture of Ms. Bernstein in cheerful red. She wants visitors to her site "to relate to me as an individual," she explained by e-mail.

Among the articles this season are a survey of string beans, with recipes, by Betty Fussell, a cookbook author and a new contributor. Other newcomers include Anne Willan of La Varenne Cooking School in Paris and Bruce Aidells, the sausage maker and co-author, with Denis Kelly, of "The Complete Meat Cookbook." A Purim article by Janice Shamberg offers a hamantaschen recipe. GraceAnn Walden, a San Francisco Chronicle columnist, gives the lowdown on dim sum (get a table near the kitchen), with thumbnail reviews of Chinese restaurants specializing in dim sum on both coasts.

Scrolling down to "Food," the visitor will find categories like a dining directory (for restaurant reviews), recipes, ethnic cuisine, farmers' markets and "Chef's Corner" (for kitchen tools and cooking schools).

In a change that reflects the growing corporatism of the Internet, Ms. Bernstein has affiliated her site with the Web site womensforum.com, a mall of 60 sites, half a dozen of those about food. The mall does advertising and public relations for its tenants and helps with software suggestions.

Now a pull-down menu at Sally's Place will take the Net surfer to sites like the Ex-Wives and Second Wives Clubs, Bridal Zine and the Women's Resource Center.

Sally's Place (www.sallybernstein.com), operated by International Association of Culinary Professionals charter member Sally Bernstein, is a colossal cyberbuffet. Visitors can learn about everything from sockeye salmon to Californian Pinot Gris to good eats in St. Louis.

The site includes chats with culinary bigwigs such as Thomas Keller, chef/owner of the five-star restaurant French Laundry in Yountville, Calif., and tips and recipes for theme parties such as an Alsatian sausage-tasting celebration. Other highlights: culinary travel tales by Anne Willan, founder of the famed French cooking school La Varenne, food-related crossword puzzles and lists of U.S. and international farmers' markets.
