Located across the street from the Japan Center, Sanppo is one of the many restaurants in Japantown. There are numerous reasons to recommend Sanppo and it caters to locals as well as the many tourists who frequent the area. Sanppo is a small, casual spot with a visual kitchen that puts out quite tasty food. Although there is no sushi bar per say, quality sushi and sashimi are both available on the menu. There are also sushi specials that are not on the menu such as spider rolls, or soft-shell crab sushi (5 pieces for $6.95) which are very good.
Newcomers might try one of the nabes. Large, broth-filled bowls contain either chicken, meat, seafood or vegetables along with soy bean cakes and cooked eggs. Tempura is also popular here. Prawns, fish, chicken or vegetables are dipped in a batter, deep fried and served with a dipping sauce. Vegetarians will find four tofu choices, one with squid. Japanese beer, sake and wines are offered.
If you cannot get to the restaurant, most food can be packaged to go.
