As the coming of age in the world of Spanish cuisine thrives, Ramblas follows a traditional path of classic dishes that include tapas, paellas and other interpretations of modern Spanish fare. The consistent high marks from sources such as Zagat’s, as well as a recent Winner of Critics “Choice for Best Tapas The Best of the Bay”- SF Guardian must be the result of many delicacies on the menu. One standout is the sopa de ajo, a garlic soup with a poached egg, crostini and manchego cheese. The broth is rich and hearty and the egg, in combination with the cheese, almost make for a meal itself. But don't miss the other memorable items like the pan con tomate (toasted bread pieces rubbed with garlic and fresh grated tomato, topped with jamon serrano and manchego cheese. Other standouts are the gambas al ajillo or sautéed white shrimp with garlic, sherry & olive oil and the boquerones( vinegar & citrus marinated white anchovies). The delicate, white anchovies have been marinated in just enough olive oil to be soft and delicate, yet are savory and tangy in flavor. Other Spanish tapas worth trying are the traditional Spanish tortilla (an omelette often made with potatoes or other fillings) and the aceitas (olives of the Spanish varietals: Arbequina, Manzanilla & Empeltre marinated in garlic and herbs). The churros and chocolates and the flan are some of the deserts worth trying. Half priced pitchers of sangria before 7pm and a full bar make for a great party place or, a great meeting place to get the night started.
