When the Sabella family emigrated here from Sicily in 1871, they made their living by fishing the bay. They opened this seafood restaurant in 1920, and they've been in business here ever since. Today, the fourth generation of Sabellas runs the place. The huge banquet-style room has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the wharf, and a bar in the back is warmed by a fireplace that would look right at home in an Aspen ski lodge. Special dishes include crab cioppino with shellfish; a huge crab and bay shrimp louie that includes avocado; bouillabaisse; sauteed fresh Monterey calamari; and abalone Dore, fresh from the tank with a lemon-garlic beurre blanc and sauteed spinach. The abalone is pricey, but only Sabella's has it live from the tank.
Executive Chef Todd Hansen adds a contemporary flair and a bit of the exotic spice to the family menu favorites. Diners may choose from a large selection of fresh local seafood including live abalone, Maine lobster, and Dungeness crab from a 1,000 gallon salt water tank designed and maintained to bring these crustaceans directly from tank to table. This is why Business Traveler Magazine awarded A. Sabella's with the "Best Seafood Restaurant of the Year" award.
