Overview:
Shoehorned into a cozy space in a residential building on a tree lined street, 1550 Hyde is the type of place every neighborhood wants on a street any neighborhood would be proud of. This one block stretch is too cosmopolitan to be outside of the city and too picturesque to be in the heart of it. It is an oasis of calm amidst the hustle of the surroundings. A step through the door leads into the oddly shaped room with its slightly sloping floors; it feels like you are entering a friend’s living room. This is further enhanced by the casual but professional servers who have emigrated from management positions at some of the city’s top restaurants. Coming from local farms, the food furthers the illusion that you are outside of the city. The menu changes daily to reflect what is in season. Everything is impeccably fresh and the purity of each ingredient is retained, whether it be thickly sliced heirloom tomatoes with a parmesan sformato or housemade fettuccine with a chicken liver bolognese sauce. It is simple food without pretension or decoration, but very well prepared. The wine list provides ample opportunity for new discoveries; it is perhaps an anomaly to a restaurant which in every other regard seems to be such a wonderful example of why home is where the heart is, if only this was home.
